A Big Announcement, And a Big Ask
I created this Substack back when it looked like Twitter might disappear any second. When I did, I promised I wouldn’t flood your inboxes. But today I’m reaching out because I have a big announcement, and a big ask, to make.
If we’re connected here, I assume it’s because we have some shared values and priorities, which probably include the importance of social justice and the need to fight systemic inequality at the level of public policy. Over the past few years I’ve felt a growing burden to do more than just talk about these things. A couple of months ago I was approached about the possibility of running for office. It seemed crazy at first, but as I’ve leaned in, doors have continued to open. On Monday of this week, I declared my candidacy for the Indiana State House District 62 seat. I believe this is an opportunity for me to put my money where my mouth is and get more involved in the fight for justice. It’s an opportunity for me to tangibly express love for my neighbors in the public square.
That’s the announcement. Now for the ask.
The unfortunate reality is that running an effective campaign is stupid expensive. It shouldn’t be this way, but it is. My advisers have told me that I should expect to raise about a quarter of a million dollars if I’m going to be competitive against a well-funded incumbent in the other party. I know most of you don’t live in my district, or even my state, but I do believe that positive political change can have ripple effects far beyond its origin. I would be so grateful if you could chip in and help me fight for a government that works for everyone, not just special interest groups and culture warriors. It’s true that literally every dollar helps. There’s a link to donate below as well as links to the website and various socials if you want to stay connected with the journey.
